Onions have a short growing time and form a fine, pleasant top with a mild flavor reminiscent of leeks. The stem is long and wide. No actual onion is formed. Can be harvested as a fairly young plant. If sown late (August), the bulb can be overwintered for early harvest in the spring (mid-May). May require winter cover to overwinter. Used in salad, soup, rice and noodle dishes (used especially in the East) or as a steamed vegetable. Place in sun to partial shade. Requires a sandy, humus-rich soil. Keep the soil moist after sowing until germination has started.
