Variety with red leaf stalks. The leaves are used like spinach and the stems like asparagus. Thinning harvest gradually and then leaf by leaf (outermost) or cut off the whole plant 2-3cm from the ground. New leaves emerge that can be harvested throughout the fall. Often grown as a 1 year old, but is a 2 year old plant, which overwinters extensively in much of the country. Can then give an early harvest before the plant flowers in year 2. Thrives in a loamy, nutritious and well-drained soil.
