The leaves are used as lettuce, the stems as asparagus - hence the name Asparagus Lettuce. The leaves (though not all) are picked from below during the summer. The plant is stemmed until the stem is about 30 cm long. The stem is then harvested, peeled and enjoyed raw, fried or boiled. Thrives in sun to partial shade in humus-rich, moist soil. Sensitive to salt.
