Leaf chicory is sometimes called radicchio. This variety grows small, red cabbage-like heads whose centre is an intense red colour with white veins. Tastes somewhat bitter, but is an exotic element in a mixed salad. Leaf chicory is harvested relatively late, starting ca 3 months after sowing, since the heads need autumn cold to develop properly. Thrives in humus-rich, water-retaining and well-drained soil in sheltered spots. Water regularly.
