Predominantly used fresh and grown for their tender, immature seeds, which, unlike other beans, can be eaten raw in salads. Also used lightly cooked in casseroles and stews. The broad bean has many uses as a vegetable, for shelter and for green manure (nitrogen fixing). Place in a sunny position in medium to heavy, nutrient and humus rich soil. Keep the soil moist after sowing until germination has started.
