The variety is mostly planted for its incredibly beautiful seed pods that resemble a hen surrounded by her little chicks - hence the name Hens & Chicks. After flowering, the green seed pod can be picked, dried and then used as an everlasting flower. Sowing in the fall results in earlier flowering. So possibly both in spring and fall to extend the beautiful flowering period. Thrives in most well-drained soil types. After sowing, the soil is kept moist until germination has started properly.
