How to sow chamomile:
- Prepare the soil: Chamomile thrives best in well-drained soil. Make sure to loosen the soil and remove any weeds or large clumps.
- Choose the right location: Chamomile prefers to grow in full sun or partial shade. Choose a spot in the garden where the plants get enough light to thrive.
- Sow the seeds: Take a handful of chamomile seeds and spread them evenly over the prepared soil. You can also mix the seeds with some sand to get a more even spread. Chamomile seeds are small, so make sure not to sow them too deeply. A lightly sprinkled covering of soil or sand over the seeds is sufficient.
- Water gently: Use a fine spray bottle or a jug with a fine jet to water the seeds gently. The aim is to moisten the soil without washing away the seeds. Keep the soil moist but not soaked throughout the germination process.
- Post-sowing care: Monitor your chamomile plants and make sure they get enough water and light. Keep the soil moist by watering when necessary, but avoid overwatering which can lead to rot. For the first few weeks, you can also cover the seeds with a thin fiber cloth or growing plastic to help with moisture regulation and protect them from the cold.
- Thinning out seedlings: Once the seedlings have grown to a height of about 5-10 centimeters, you can thin them out to make room for better growth. Remove weaker plants so that the remaining ones have enough room to thrive.
- Harvest and enjoy: Chamomile plants usually start flowering within 6-8 weeks after sowing. Once the flowers have opened, you can harvest them to make tea or dry them to use later.
