Also used as a decorative solitary plant. Has impressive, blue, thistle-like flowers and silvery leaves. Well suited as a cut flower. The fleshy base of the shells and the flower base itself are edible. The earlier the sowing, the better. Harvest when the tips of the shells begin to open outwards (a sign of incipient flowering). Thrives in nutritious, well-drained and deep soil in a warm location. Water abundantly and add extra fertilizer during the summer. Full sun. Does not tolerate standing water. Keep the soil moist after sowing until germination has started.
